Please don't buy too small!

The most common mistake made when purchasing a mattress is buying it too small! This is easily the number one mistake new bed-buyers make. To help you avoid this same mistake here are a few guidelines Rocky Mountain Mattress can provide for choosing the right mattress size:

Full beds, often called "doubles," are 53 inches wide, which is just 15 inches wider than a twin size (single). It is fairly easy to see that with only 53 inches this will leave each partner only 27 inches of personal space. This is about the width of a crib! Both twin and full sizes are approximately 75 inches long, which may be too short for many adults, especially men.

Recommendations: Full sizes are really only enough space for a single sleeper and preferably one under the height of 5 feet 5 inches. Many parents are now choosing full size mattresses over twin mattresses for teenage bedrooms. Teenagers tend to agree that the full mattress gives them a much more comfortable place to rest than the twin mattress!

Queen beds are typically 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long. This means they are a full 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than the average full sized mattress. These additional inches can make a big difference in comfort, especially for couples. The queen is today's most popular mattress size (although it is not our favorite size!). It is important to note that this still only leaves couples with 30 inches of personal space individually, which means each adult still has 9 inches less width than if they slept alone in a twin bed.

Recommendations: The Queen size is a good choice for guest rooms, smaller master bedrooms, and for couples who prefer snuggling. It's also a great choice for single sleepers who "sprawl."

King beds are 76 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long. This gives the sleeper a foot and a half more width (about 18 inches) than you get with a queen size. This is as close as a couple can come to having the amount of personal space (38 inches) a single sleeper will have on a twin bed. It is noteworthy that two twin extra-long beds pushed together are about the same size as a king size.

**For consumers on the west coast, there is also the "California King," which is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long – 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king.

Recommendations: King size is easily the best choice for couples that want maximum personal sleeping space. It is also our favorite size here at Rocky Mountain Mattress. The King size provides extra space for children, pets, and body pillows. Just make sure you have the bedroom size to fit a King. As a general rule of thumb we recommend getting out the tape measure if there is any doubt that your bedroom can house a King size bed.
