4 Methods For A Green Mattress Removal

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

May 2, 2008 – On April 28, 2008 one of the Rocky Mountain Mattress sales managers was asked a fairly simple question “what is the best way to dispose of an old mattress?” Normally, he would have responded to this question by saying something like “Not sure there is a best way? maybe your city municipality can come pick it up for you?” However, his response required a little more thought as the present question had been prefaced with this rhetorical question “RMM is really big into being earth conscious, right?”

This customer’s questions have spawned a Rocky Mountain Mattress quest to determine the most earth-friendly ways to dispose of an old mattress. RMM would like to share with the general public a list of helpful suggestions for getting rid of an old bed.

The suggestions are listed in no particular order:
1. Use a professional junk removal service that recycles. Today there are many reasonably priced companies that will come to your house and pick up “junk”. The best part is many of these companies work exceedingly hard to either donate or recycle the “junk” that they pick up.

Helpful resources:

*donates or recycles 60% of the junk they pick up.

*recycles 70% of the junk they pick up

2. Recycle. Many areas of the United States have local recycling programs. Contact your local municipality to find out if there is a recycling program available in your area.

*features a great online tool for finding a recycling or re-use station in your area.

3. Sell. While it is not always recommended to “pass-on” old beds there is a market for second hand products.
Helpful resources:

4. Donate: As previously stated it is not always recommended to donate an old mattress and many charities will not accept used mattresses for health reasons. However, this is a great way to get rid of your “old junk”. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Contact your local charities.

*gifting organization that has reduced waste in landfills by over 300 tons a day
