Why You May Need a New Mattress

The average person spends 3,000 hours a year asleep. That means that you spend over 17.5 weeks a year in your bed. No wonder you should be replacing your mattress often. The Better Sleep Council recommends that you replace your mattress every 5-7 years. Higher quality memory foam and latex mattresses can last up to 20 years. But, more than likely, it is time to replace your mattress. Here is why you may desperately need a new mattress…

1. Life. How long have you been sleeping on your current mattress? Have you had it since you were a teenager? Did you get your mattress when you got married (over 15 years ago)? If so, it is time to replace it. Your current mattress may have a 15, 20, or 30 year warranty, but that doesn’t mean that is how long the mattress will last. Older mattresses can heavily affect the quality of sleep you get.

2. Age. This time, we aren’t talking about the age of your mattress. We are talking about how old you are. As you get older, your body’s sleeping needs change. Although you might have preferred a softer mattress ten years ago, your body might need a firmer one now. In order to relieve any sleeping discomfort, you will need to replace your mattress and assess your body’s needs every few years. A good indicator to see if you have different sleeping needs than you did a while ago is…do you wake up with your sheets all skiwampus? If so, it probably means that you are tossing and turning more. This means that your body is ready for a mattress change.

3. Is it sagging? If your mattress is sagging in the middle, or anywhere for that matter, it is time to get rid of it. Take a closer look and see if any side is higher than another. If it is, kiss it goodbye.

4. Noises and Movements. If you roll around on your bed or make the slightest movement, does your bed creak? Does it sway at all? These may be indicators that the wooden box spring is losing its support system. If the box spring breaks down before the top mattress, don’t hesitate to replace it first.

It doesn’t take a lot of observation to tell if you need a new mattress. In order to get a good night’s sleep, you need to replace your mattress every few years. Believe me, your body will appreciate the change.
