To Flip or Not To Flip, Your Mattress That Is

October 11th, 2008

Here is the Rocky Mountain Mattress question of the day – To Flip or Not To Flip? These tips are for your everyday mattresses.

Mattress care is extremely important if you want to get the most use out of your mattress. Flipping your mattress is an important step to take to ensure that your mattress lasts. Here’s why…

Not Flipping Your Mattress
Causes uneven wear spots
Can cause your mattress to “break” years before it should
Wears out the top layer
Causes dust, dander and dust mites to build up on your mattress surface

Flipping Your Mattress
Makes sure your mattress wears evenly
Adds years to the life of your mattress
Gradually uses the entire mattress, not just the top layer
Resists the build up of dust, dander and dust mites more because the mattress is being flipped consistently

It is so important that you take care of your mattress. You need to flip and rotate your mattress at least every six months. Flipping your mattress means that you flip the mattress so that the bottom is on top and the top is on bottom. This will keep the wear of your mattress from being on one side. You also need to make sure to rotate your mattress. This means you rotate the bed in a clockwise or counter-clockwise pattern, moving the foot of the bed to the head and the head of the bed to the foot.

If your mattress can’t be flipped, be sure to rotate it. For instance, it really wouldn’t make much sense to flip a pillow top mattress. If you do, you’d be sleeping on the pillow top surface some of the time and a different surface the rest of the time. Make sure that you rotate your mattress, especially if you can’t flip it.

Flipping and rotating your mattress will add years to the life of your bed. You will get better comfort and support from an even mattress than you would from a worn-out old mattress that has several uneven spots. The answer to the question “To flip or not to flip” is “to flip!”
