Open Cell Memory Foam - vs - Closed Cell Memory Foam {Explained}

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Occasionally, we hear from customers who are concerned about the stories they’ve heard about hot memory foam mattresses. In most of these situations, a friend or acquaintance has complained about how hot their memory foam mattress is, and how it’s difficult to sleep and stay cool & dry. Chances are, this person has inadvertently purchased a memory foam mattress made of low-quality, slow recovery memory foam designed with a closed cell design.

Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Memory Foam

Memory foam is designed with either an open cell or closed cell make up. Open cell memory foam returns to it’s previous shape quickly, and allows for more airflow through the material. Think of open cell memory foam as having tiny air balloons in its core. Even with pressure applied to the foam, air is able to flow through the memory foam mattress. This keeps the mattress cool, fresh, and dry.

Closed memory foam is designed for many uses, and some lower-quality manufacturers may use closed cell memory foam for mattresses. These mattresses do not allow for adequate air flow, which will lead to a warm sleeping surface. The memory foam is unable to “breathe,” which traps moisture & body heat, making sleep less sound.

Rocky Mountain Mattress Products
The manufacturers used by Rocky Mountain Mattress - Bayer & Foamex memory foam mattresses - use only open-cell mattresses. These products are specifically designed to be breathable, cool, and dry, and are among the highest quality foams created.

In fact, the Aerus by Foamex is a revolutionary memory foam which allows air to flow up to eight times more freely through its open cell system.

As the air travels through the memory foam, heat and moisture is pulled away from the sleeping individual and out of the memory foam mattress.

5 Benefits You Gain With Adding A Latex Mattress Topper To Your Current Bed

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Latex foam offers a number of special features and benefits that have made it one of the most popular mattress materials over the past few years. Natural latex is environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and anti-microbial, durable, and provides a superior sleeping experience when compared to traditional inner-spring mattresses.

Durability & Longevity

The purchase of a latex mattress or all natural latex mattress topper is a long-term investment. In fact, it’s not uncommon for latex beds to last up to three decades, as a result of the product’s durability.

Support & Luxury

Besides boasting a long life, latex products offer superior orthopedic support. Our latex mattress toppers work great for anyone, although, we specifically recommend latex over memory foam for individuals who weigh 250 pounds or more. Aside from being supportive the natural latex is also therapeutic, conforming naturally to body contours and weight.

Breathable & Moisture-Resistant

Part of the reason latex mattress products have such a long life is owed to its moisture resistance. This water resistant feature in simply not found in many other mattress products. Latex mattresses and mattress toppers are pinholed, which keeps them breathable, helping the mattress stay fresh, cool, and dry.

Anti-Microbial, Anti-Bacterial, & Dust Mite Resistant

Many mattresses are prone to the growth and spread of bacteria, fungi, and dust mites. Natural latex mattress toppers and mattresses provide natural prevention against these potentially obnoxious problems. Bacteria growth can lead to the spread of disease, while fungi, mold, and dust mites can lead to respiratory problems, asthma, and other related problems for allergy sufferers.

Environmentally Friendly

Natural latex is an eco-friendly alternative to many other mattress products. The serum used to make latex mattress products is taken directly from the rubber tree. The process used to manufacture latex mattress products does not emit CFCs or other harmful emissions, and no dangerous chemicals are used to produce our products.

All Natural Latex Mattress Toppers

Rocky Mountain Mattress offers two all-natural latex mattress toppers. These eco-friendly toppers provide additional support and comfort for any of our high-quality mattresses, and are available in two densities. Each mattress topper features perforated holes to promote air flow, leading to a fresher, drier, and more sound sleeping experience.

Our medium-firm natural latex mattress toppers have a density of 5.2 pounds offering superior support for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface. The medium plush topper offers a density of 4.75 pounds, which provides for a more plush topper. Both latex mattress toppers are available in 1, 2, 3, and 4 inch profiles.

All Natural Latex Pillows

Rocky Mountain Mattress also offers an all natural latex pillow that (in my opinion) is the most comfortable pillow on the face of the earth!

Rocky Mountain Mattress Explains “Anti-Bacterial” and “Anti-Microbial” In Regards To Mattress Products

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Many quality mattresses and accessories advertise features such as “anti-bacterial” and “anti-microbial.” Without fully understanding how those features actually relate to your mattress, though, those features carry little meaning.

Why is it important to have an anti-bacterial mattress cover?

Mattresses provide warm havens where bacteria are prone to thrive and spread. Particularly with nightly use - when warm body temperatures heat up the material on the mattress - dangerous bacteria, including E coli, streptococcus, and others, are prone to survive on mattresses.

In addition to carrying the potential to spread disease, some bacteria can cause significant problems for individuals prone to allergies and asthma. The growth of bacteria can also lead to unpleasant odors building up and being emitted from your mattress.

Bacteria are everywhere. The key is having the means to ensure that they do not grow in areas where you have the potential to exposure. An anti-bacterial mattress cover is designed to prevent the growth and survival of bacteria on your mattress.

What does anti-microbial mean?

Anti-microbial products work to not only prevent the growth of bacteria, but also impede the spread and growth of mold and fungi that can develop in mattresses and pillows. Such microbes can lead to respiratory problems, asthma attacks, allergies, and many other problems if they develop in your sleeping area.

Like bacteria, mold and fungi thrive in warm areas like mattresses and pillows. An anti-microbial cover will work to prevent this from occurring, and offers additional protection.

How do I prevent bacteria, mold, and fungi from forming in my mattress & pillows?

Quality mattress protectors are the best way of preventing bacteria growth on your mattress and pillows. Protect-A-Bed is one of the leading protective mattress toppers, and is specifically designed to help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus. Protect-A-Bed also provides superior protection against dust mites, which can also lead to respiratory problems and allergy attacks.

In addition to being anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, Protect-A-Bed Bed Covers are waterproof, stain resistant, and breathable. The mattress topper helps to moderate temperature, and can be used on all latex, memory foam, and inner-spring mattresses.

The Bed Bugs Are Biting (They Are Called Dust Mites) - So How Can You Sleep Tight?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

“Sleep tight & don’t let the bed bugs bite.”

While this common bedtime sentiment has a nice ring to it, it also bears some truth. The “bed bugs” referenced here are actually dust mites, and like it or not, they are living in your mattress! In fact, the average mattress can contain thousands - or even millions - of these microscopic critters, and while they are for the most part harmless, there are some potential problems that dust mites can cause.

What are dust mites?

Dust mites are tiny bugs that consume the dead skin cells left behind by humans and in pet dander, and the two most common places for dust mites to be found are in mattresses and carpet. The mites thrive in warm, moist areas, which is why mattresses are a harboring ground for dust mites.

Are dust mites harmful?

In most cases, dust mites are not directly harmful. However, many people suffer from allergic reactions to dust mites and their feces, which can make sleeping on a dust mite-infested mattress miserable. Those who are effected by dust mite allergies often report sneezing, wheezing, itching, watery eyes, and other respiratory problems. For this, we offer the BugLock™ 3-sided zipper system and ALLER-ZIP™ bed cover seal for complete protection against allergens, dust mites and bed bugs. This product is bug entry, escape and bite proof.

Dust mites can also cause problems for individuals with asthma. A visit to a doctor who specializes in the identification and treatment of allergies can diagnose a dust mite allergy. Dust mites are also to blame for many cases of eczema.

How are dust mites treated?

The best treatment against dust mites in your mattress is to use a mattress protector regardless of whether or not you have been diagnosed with an allergy to dust mites. Perhaps the best known mattress protector is the Protect-a-Bed.

Protect-a-Bed is a thin mattress protector designed to prevent dust mites from breeding in your mattress. The protector is waterproof, and also helps maintain a comfortable temperature on your bed, which leads to more sound sleep. Protect-a-Bed also helps prevent stains.
